Buttermilk is often found in recipes that also contain baking soda, nutmeg, confectioner's sugar, molasses, caraway seeds and food coloring


Substitution for 1 cup buttermilk:

1 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1 cup milk

Stir well, and allow the mixture to set for a bit and thicken.
