Pine nuts refer to the edible seeds of pine tree. Pine nuts are extracted from pine cones and are initially covered with a hard shell. These have a long shelf life when unshelled, but the shell must be removed before it can be eaten. Shelled nuts have a much shorter life, and can deteriorate within weeks or even days if conditions are humid.

Pine nuts are often found in recipes that also contain brandy, gorgonzola cheese, artichoke hearts, wild rice, chicken legs and beef tenderloin
