Original recipe serves 6

Ingredients (serves 18)

½ 2x 3x Reset

  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 medium onions ; chopped
  • 3 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 pounds beef ; or ground turkey if desired
  • 30 fluid ounces tomato soup ; condensed
  • In My Kitchen

  • Directions

     Prep: 20 min | Cook: 40 min | Ready in: 1 hr
    1. Brown the meat and chopped onion over high heat in a large skillet.
    2. Remove from heat and drain the fat well. Using a leaner meat will make this easier.
    3. Combine the rest of the ingredients, and bring to a boil, and then reduce heat to simmer.
    4. Let simmer until mixture thickens to desired consistency. Add additional water to adjust if necessary. Don't worry about adding too much water, because it simply evaporates if left on the heat.
    5. Remove from heat and place meat into taco shells. Add desired toppings and enjoy!
The original recipe makes about 10-12 tacos, or maybe a little more, depending on how big you like your tacos.

decent sloppy joe recipe but taco meat? I think not....

    Cooksgood on 2014-11-13

Recipe is ok...needs a lot of tweaking depending on one's palate. I added about tablespoon of paprika, a teaspoon of sugar, used garlic powder instead of garlic salt, added a dash of garlic powder and onion powder, and put some salt until the taste us all balanced. Came out perfectly yummy that I didn't even need to use taco sauce on top of it.

You can add some cumin (1/2 tsp or to taste) to this to give it a more authentic Mexican flavor. Very tasty!

I guess if someone is used to having native Mexican cuisine, then this may not appeal to them. On the other hand, if people do look to a fast food chain as something they find top notch, then perhaps their palate is not refined enough.

I dunno... I tried this and it was pretty good. Adjust the seasonings to taste. Reading some negative comments on here, if your idea of a "taco" is the processed crap you get at Taco Bell, then I guess that isn't what you get here.

I just made this recipe and came back to post my opinion. I just read the last comment by ekilpatrick1 and have to whole heartily agree...this recipe tastes nothing like tacos and more like sloppy joes! What a disappointment. I will not be making this recipe again.

You people are NUTZ! This is a horrible recipe... It tasted like I was eating Sloppy Joe's rather than Tacos! I will never use the recipe again. It's back to Lawry's for me. That's the World best taco seasoning in my opinion!!!

A couple of chopped chipotle peppers thrown into the meat while simmering gives it a nice flavor.

if you use ground turkey, using ground breast (white) meat doesn't quite taste right. The flavor of the white meat tends to overpower everything else unless you add a lot more spices and onion.

I tried this with ground chicken. Works just as well.

Here's a tip: You can add some chopped up jalepeno pepper to the meat while simmering to give it an extra kick.

Hands down, these are the best tacos I've ever tasted. No more commercial tacos for me.

This is indeed the world's best taco meat. I just tried it, and I love the mustard and W-sauce flavors in it. Thanks, for my new favorite taco filling.

Warming your taco shells before filling helps keep them from breaking apart while eating.
