A wedge-shaped, usually fried, snack-food made from corn tortillas. They are usually made of yellow corn but could be made from white, red or blue corn. They were invented in Los Angeles, California in the 1940s but have been associated with Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine. Tortilla chips are a key part of a dish known as nachos, which consist of cheddar or other cheeses melted over tortilla chips. This is usually served with sour cream and guacamole.

Tortilla chips are often found in recipes that also contain corn, black beans, chili pepper, monterey jack cheese, hominy and chili beans
