Gingerbread made the traditional way, an old favorite that is great any time of the year.

Ingredients (serves 8)

  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg(s)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves ; ground
  • 1 teaspoon ginger ; ground
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water ; water

  • Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C).
    2. Grease and flour a 9 inch square pan.
    3. Cream together the butter and sugar in a large bowl.
    4. Beat in the egg and the molasses.
    5. Combine the flour, salt, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and ginger in a separate large bowl.  Blend into the butter mixture.
    6. Stir in the hot water, and pour the batter into the pan.
    7. Bake for 1 hour, until a toothpick or knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool before serving.
