The fruit of the tree Carica papaya, which is native to the tropics in the Americas. It is now cultivated in various tropical regions around the world, including India, the Phillipines, Sri Lanka and South Africa. The ripe fruit is often eaten raw, and the unripened fruit is usually used cooked, in stews and currys. The black papaya seeds are edible, and are often ground up and used as a seasoning. Papaya leaves are sometimes eaten raw in some parts of Asia as a vegetable.
